About KIG

Our purpose and approach to independent geopolitical research

A Korean perspective on a connected world

Korea International Institute of Geopolitics examines the choices facing the Korean Peninsula in a changing international environment. Security, industrial competition, technological change and climate pressures are considered together, with attention to the institutions and communities through which policy is put into practice.

The purpose is to make complex regional questions easier to investigate and discuss. Research connects Korean and international sources, sets developments in their historical context and distinguishes an observed change from a forecast about what may follow.

For people working across policy and practice

The research agenda speaks to policy practitioners, researchers, organisations and readers who need to understand how international developments affect Korea and its wider region. Longer studies, concise briefings and structured discussions offer different ways to explore the same underlying questions.

How research takes shape

  1. Start with a precise question

Define the decision, geographical scope and period under review. A focused question makes clear which evidence is relevant and which issues fall outside the work.

  2. Read across sources

Compare public documents, data and regional-language accounts. Identify the author, publication date and limitations of each source, and retain disagreements that matter to the analysis.

  3. Make the reasoning visible

Explain how evidence supports a finding, what alternative interpretations remain and what new information could change the assessment.
